Gin Rummy is a two-player rummy game where each turn is a draw-and-discard decision. The playable game above starts immediately, while this guide explains the setup, melds, deadwood, knocking, going gin, scoring, and beginner strategy.
Objective
The objective is to score points by forming sets and runs while keeping unmatched cards, called deadwood, as low as possible. A hand ends when a player knocks with low deadwood, goes gin with no deadwood, or the stock runs too low and the hand is cancelled.
Setup and Play Area
- Gin Rummy uses a standard 52-card deck with no jokers.
- Each player receives 10 cards. One card is turned face up to start the discard pile, and the rest become the stock.
- Aces are low. Runs are built in the same suit, such as 4, 5, and 6 of hearts.
- The game continues over multiple hands until one player reaches 100 points.
Available Moves
- Draw the top card from the stock pile or take the top card from the discard pile.
- Discard one card after drawing.
- Form sets of three or four cards of the same rank.
- Form runs of three or more consecutive cards in the same suit.
- Knock after drawing if your deadwood is 10 points or less, or go gin if your deadwood is zero.
Gin Rummy Strategy
- Watch the discard pile. Taking a discard reveals information, but it can complete a meld immediately.
- Keep cards that can work in more than one meld, such as middle cards in a possible run.
- Discard high-value deadwood early unless it is close to becoming part of a meld.
- Knock when you can score cleanly, but consider playing on if you are close to gin.
- Pay attention to cards the opponent takes from the discard pile so you avoid feeding their melds.
Variants
- Oklahoma Gin changes the knock limit based on the first upcard. CardGamesHQ currently uses standard Gin Rummy with a 10-point knock limit.
- Some tables use different gin and undercut bonuses. CardGamesHQ uses the common 20-point gin bonus and 10-point undercut bonus.
- Some rulesets use Hollywood scoring. CardGamesHQ currently keeps one straightforward score to 100.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is deadwood in Gin Rummy?
Deadwood is the total value of cards that are not part of a set or run. Lower deadwood gives you better chances to knock or win the hand.
When can you knock in Gin Rummy?
You can knock after drawing and discarding when your deadwood is 10 points or less.
What does going gin mean?
Going gin means your hand has no deadwood after your discard. It earns a bonus and prevents the opponent from laying off cards.

Gin Rummy is a two-player draw-and-discard card game where you build sets and runs, reduce deadwood, and decide when to knock or try for gin.
How to Play
Draw one card from the stock or discard pile, then discard one card. Build melds in your hand: sets of the same rank or runs of three or more cards in the same suit.
Gin Rummy Rules
Each player starts with 10 cards. After drawing, you may knock if your deadwood is 10 points or less. If all your cards fit into melds after your discard, you can go gin.
Scoring
A normal knock scores the difference between deadwood totals. Going gin scores a bonus plus the opponent's deadwood. If the opponent has equal or lower deadwood after a knock, they undercut and score a bonus.
Controls
Use Draw Stock or Take Discard, then tap a card to discard. Use Knock or Gin when available, use Undo to step back, or press Ctrl+Z on desktop.
