Spoons Card Game

Objective

The objective is to avoid being the player left without a spoon. Build four of a kind by drawing and discarding cards. When one player has four matching ranks and grabs a spoon, everyone else must grab one quickly.

Setup and Play Area

• Spoons uses one standard 52-card deck with no jokers.
• Each player starts with four cards.
• There is one fewer spoon than the number of players, so this four-player version has three spoons.
• The draw pile and discard pile sit in the center while players work toward four of a kind.

Available Moves

• Draw one card from the stock.
• Choose one card to discard so your hand returns to four cards.
• Try to keep cards that move you toward four of a kind.
• Grab a spoon when you have four of a kind.
• If another player grabs first, grab one of the remaining spoons before they are gone.

Spoons Card Game Strategy

• Keep the rank you have the most copies of and discard singletons first.
• Do not wait too long after making four of a kind. The first spoon starts the race.
• Watch the spoon count after every discard because an opponent may have completed a set.
• If you are close to spelling SPOONS, play conservatively and react quickly once a spoon is taken.
• Use undo while learning the digital flow, especially the draw, select, discard, and grab sequence.

Variants

• Physical Spoons is usually played with three or more players. CardGamesHQ uses you plus three computer players to preserve the one-fewer-spoon race.
• Some groups eliminate a player after each missed spoon. This version uses the common letter-scoring format where missed spoons spell SPOONS.
• Some table rules pass cards around the circle continuously. This digital version keeps the same four-of-a-kind and spoon race goals while using a clear turn-based draw and discard flow.
