Objective

The objective is to be the first player to play every card in your hand. Each suit starts with its seven, then grows downward toward Ace and upward toward King.

Setup and Play Area

  • Sevens uses one standard 52-card deck with no jokers.
  • The deck is dealt to four players.
  • The 7 of Diamonds starts the layout in this version.
  • Cards are played into four suit rows, one row for clubs, diamonds, hearts, and spades.

Available Moves

  • Play any seven if that suit has not started yet.
  • Play the next lower card in a suit row, such as the 6 after the 7.
  • Play the next higher card in a suit row, such as the 8 after the 7.
  • Pass only if you have no legal card to play.
  • Keep taking turns until one player has no cards left.

Sevens Card Game Strategy

  • Open suits when it helps your hand, but remember that playing a seven may also unlock cards for opponents.
  • Hold blocking cards when possible, especially cards that prevent long runs from opening.
  • Watch which suit rows are stuck because those rows often control the next few turns.
  • If you have multiple playable cards, prefer the card that unlocks more of your own hand.
  • Use undo while learning the layout flow and legal move timing.

Variants

  • Some Sevens games require a different starting seven, often the 7 of Clubs. CardGamesHQ uses the common 7 of Diamonds start.
  • Some groups allow forced play when a card is legal, while others allow strategic passing. This version allows passing only when no legal card is available.
  • Fan Tan, Domino, and Parliament are closely related names for the same layout-family card game.
