Objective

The objective is to move every card to the four foundations. Each foundation starts with an Ace and builds upward by suit to King, while the tableau helps you reveal hidden cards and organize descending alternating-color runs.

Setup and Play Area

  • Solitaire uses one standard 52-card deck with no jokers.
  • Seven tableau columns are dealt left to right, with only the bottom card of each column face up.
  • The remaining cards form the stock. Cards from the stock move through the waste pile and can be played to the tableau or foundations.
  • Four empty foundations sit above the tableau and build upward by suit from Ace to King.

Available Moves

  • Move tableau cards in descending rank and alternating color, such as a black 8 onto a red 9.
  • Move an Ace to an empty foundation, then continue that foundation upward by suit.
  • Move face-up tableau runs together when the whole stack follows descending alternating-color order.
  • Only Kings, or runs beginning with a King, can move into an empty tableau column.
  • Draw from the stock when no useful tableau or foundation move is available.

Solitaire Strategy

  • The best first moves usually reveal face-down tableau cards or free an Ace or Two that can start a foundation.
  • Do not move every card to the foundations immediately. A low card may still be needed as a landing spot for an alternating-color tableau run.
  • Create empty tableau columns intentionally. An empty column is most valuable when you can move a King there and reveal hidden cards behind it.
  • In draw-one Solitaire, check tableau moves before drawing again because the waste order changes which cards become available later.
  • Use undo to compare foundation timing, empty-column choices, and stock sequencing without restarting the deal.

Variants

  • Draw-one Solitaire deals one stock card at a time and is usually easier.
  • Draw-three Solitaire deals three stock cards at a time and makes waste-pile timing more important.
  • Some Klondike rules allow unlimited stock passes, while stricter versions limit how often you can recycle the stock.
  • Related solitaire games include Spider Solitaire, FreeCell, Pyramid Solitaire, TriPeaks, Golf Solitaire, Yukon, Forty Thieves, and Canfield.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Solitaire the same as Klondike?

Yes. When people say classic Solitaire online, they usually mean Klondike Solitaire.

Can any card move to an empty tableau column?

No. In Klondike Solitaire, only a King or a valid descending run that starts with a King can fill an empty tableau column.

Should I always move cards to the foundations?

Not always. Foundation moves are usually good, but sometimes keeping a card in the tableau helps move another stack and reveal hidden cards.

Are all Solitaire deals winnable?

No. Some Klondike Solitaire deals are unwinnable even with perfect play, especially when key cards are buried in an unreachable order.

What is the best first move in Solitaire?

The best first move is usually one that reveals a face-down tableau card, frees a low foundation card, or creates a useful King space.

Play Solitaire Online

Classic Solitaire, also known as Klondike, is a one-player card game about reveal timing, stock timing, and choosing when to send cards to the foundations.

Solitaire Table Flow

Use tableau moves to uncover hidden cards first, then send cards to the foundations when they no longer help create alternating-color runs.

Draw 1 Stock Timing

The stock can change which waste card is available next, so check tableau moves before drawing again. Sometimes one tableau move makes a later waste card playable.

Controls

Drag cards, tap the stock to draw, double-tap a playable top card to auto-move it, use Undo to step back, or press Ctrl+Z on desktop.
