Objective

The objective is to get rid of every card in your hand and stock before the computer. Play cards one rank higher or lower onto either center pile, refill your hand from stock, and use stuck flips only when neither player can move.

Setup and Play Area

  • Speed uses one standard 52-card deck with no jokers.
  • Each player starts with a five-card hand and a face-down stock pile.
  • Two center piles start face up between the players.
  • Two replacement piles sit beside the center piles for stuck positions.
  • This Speed version is related to Spit, but uses the five-card-hand layout rather than the multi-pile Spit layout.

Available Moves

  • Play a hand card onto either center pile if it is one rank higher or one rank lower than that pile's top card.
  • Suits and colors do not matter.
  • Aces wrap around, so King and 2 can both connect to Ace.
  • After playing from your hand, draw from your stock until you have five cards again or the stock is empty.
  • When both players have no legal move, flip one replacement card onto each center pile.

Speed Card Game Strategy

  • Play quickly, but do not tunnel on one center pile. The other pile may create a faster chain.
  • Use cards that open multiple follow-up ranks when you have a choice.
  • Keep your hand refilled while your stock still has cards because empty hand spaces reduce your options.
  • Watch Ace connections because wraparound King-Ace-2 moves can unlock otherwise stuck hands.
  • Use undo while learning the digital timing between your moves, computer moves, and stuck flips.

Variants

  • Spit and Speed are often used interchangeably, but many rulesets distinguish them by layout. CardGamesHQ uses the Speed layout with five-card hands.
  • Some groups use 10-card replacement piles and smaller player stock piles. This version uses five-card replacement piles and 15-card draw piles, matching a common online implementation.
  • Some variants score multiple rounds. This online version plays a single fast deal: first player to empty hand and stock wins.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Speed the same as Spit?

They are closely related shedding games. This page uses Speed rules with five-card hands, while classic Spit often uses rows of face-up stock piles.

Can Ace be high and low in Speed?

Yes. In this version, Ace wraps around, so you can play King or 2 on an Ace and Ace on King or 2.

When can you flip stuck cards in Speed?

Only when neither player has any legal play from hand to either center pile.

Play Speed Online

Speed is a two-player shedding card game where players race to play cards one rank higher or lower onto two center piles, refill their hands, and empty hand plus stock before the opponent.

How to Play

Play cards from your five-card hand onto either center pile when the card is one rank higher or one rank lower than the top center card.

Speed Rules

Aces wrap around, so King can play on Ace and Ace can play on King. Whenever your hand drops below five cards, it refills from your stock pile until that stock is empty.

Stuck Flips

When neither player has a legal move, flip the side replacement cards onto the two center piles. If replacement cards run out, the center piles recycle while keeping the two top cards in play.

Controls

Tap a playable hand card to move it automatically, choose a center pile when both piles are legal, use Stuck Flip when no moves exist, use Undo, or press Ctrl+Z on desktop.
